Deepfakes are AI-generated or AI-manipulated images, audio, or video that make people, objects, places, entities, or events appear authentic when they are not. They are often discussed in relation to deception, misinformation, disinformation, impersonation, and transparency obligations for synthetic media.
Synthetic media (e.g. videos, images, voices) that imitate real people using AI-based manipulation, often used for deception or harm.
Pictures and video that are deliberately altered to generate misinformation and disinformation. Advances in generative AI have lowered the barrier for the production of deepfakes (PN 708).
