Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the field of research, engineering, and deployment of machine-based systems that can perform tasks normally associated with human intelligence. Such tasks may include perception, language understanding, prediction, recommendation, reasoning, learning, decision-making, and action in real or virtual environments. AI includes multiple approaches, such as rules-based systems, machine learning, optimization, symbolic reasoning, and autonomous agents, and may trigger legal or governance obligations when used with personal data or in regulated contexts.
The field of computer science focused on creating systems capable of tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, perception, language understanding, and decision-making.

In computer science, AI research is defined as the study of "intelligent agents": any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals. Colloquially, the term "artificial intelligence" is applied when a machine mimics "cognitive" functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as "learning" and "problem solving".
A non-human program or model that can solve sophisticated tasks. For example, a program or model that translates text or a program or model that identifies diseases from radiologic images both exhibit artificial intelligence. Formally, machine learning is a sub-field of artificial intelligence. However, in recent years, some organizations have begun using the terms artificial intelligence and machine learning interchangeably.
