The Convention on Biological Diversity defined genetic resources (GRs) as "parts of biological materials that contain genetic information of value and are capable of reproducing or being reproduced" (World Intellectual Property Organization, 2020). When it comes to artificial intelligence and genetic resources, care must be taken to preserve data sovereignty, include Indigenous knowledge holders, and respect traditional knowledge (TK) and cultural rights.
