Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) ist das Forschungs-, Entwicklungs- und Einsatzfeld maschinenbasierter Systeme, die Aufgaben ausführen können, die normalerweise mit menschlicher Intelligenz verbunden sind. Solche Aufgaben können Wahrnehmung, Sprachverständnis, Vorhersage, Empfehlung, Schlussfolgern, Lernen, Entscheidungsfindung und Handeln in realen oder virtuellen Umgebungen umfassen. In computer science, AI research is defined as the study of "intelligent agents": any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals. Colloquially, the term "artificial intelligence" is applied when a machine mimics "cognitive" functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as "learning" and "problem solving".

For example, a program or model that translates text or a program or model that identifies diseases from radiologic images both exhibit artificial intelligence. Formally, machine learning is a sub-field of artificial intelligence. However, in recent years, some organizations have begun using the terms artificial intelligence and machine learning interchangeably.
