Rank, in the ordinal sense, is the position of an item or class in an ordered sequence from higher to lower or better to worse. In machine learning, ranks are used when the relative order of outputs matters more than their absolute numeric values.
The ordinal position of a class in a machine learning problem that categorizes classes from highest to lowest. For example, a behavior ranking system could rank a dog's rewards from highest (a steak) to lowest (wilted kale).
